Have you ever visited the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) and spotted something reusable that deserved a second life? Some Household Recycling Centres now have re-use Shops that divert high-quality pre-loved items from going to waste with the proceeds going to local good causes. Indeed, if the planning permission is granted, we will be getting a re-use Shop at Waterswallows HWRC this summer. In the meantime, Transition Buxton CIC has teamed up with SUEZ (who operate the HWRC on behalf of Derbyshire County Council) to bring a pop-up re-use shop to Buxton Spring Fair on Monday 4th May.
The SUEZ team at Waterswallows HWRC have been putting aside anything they reckon is re-usable for a few weeks and now there is nearly a full container of great stuff looking for new homes. The Transition Buxton volunteers will be selling crockery, toys, baskets, sports equipment, all sorts of stuff including a few children’s bikes for car boot prices on their stall as part of one of the biggest annual community events in Buxton.
“Keeping things in use as long as possible is better for the planet and better for our budgets. That’s why we run the Library of Things and monthly Buxton Repair Café, and our Pop-Up Re-Use Shop at Spring Fair is another way to reduce our collective carbon footprint. Be prepared to be impressed with the range and good condition of things looking for a new home and pick up a bargain with the added benefit of saving something from going to waste.” said Jean Ball from Transition Buxton CIC.
Jason Ruffell, Senior Site Manager at SUEZ, said: “At SUEZ, we believe resources should be kept in use for as long as possible, and we are proud to be working with Transition Buxton to support this pop-up reuse shop which give quality items a second life, reduce waste, and support the local community.”
