Clothes and fashion are one of the areas of life where the switch to sustainable is also a switch to a more social, creative, fun way of looking your best.
Clothes Swaps are a great way to refresh your wardrobe without emptying your pocket. Instead dig out some clean adult garments in good condition and bring them along to a Clothes Swap. On arrival you will receive a token for each item you bring, then shop the rails and tables to select the items that you want to ‘spend’ your tokens on.
Stitch Don’t Ditch sewing workshops are an opportunity to learn how to alter, mend and upcycle textiles using both hand and machine sewing. A team of experienced sewers are there, keen to share their skills, with all the equipment and materials you might need. Bring a project you want some help with, or make a simple cloth bag to take your Clothes Swap goodies home in.
Fast fashion has nearly doubled garment consumption since 2000 yet the average number of times a garment is worn before disposal decreased by 36% in the same period. Textile waste is a real issue. The textile industry is responsible for 8 to 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Many are turning to more sustainable options. Vintage and second hand are increasingly popular, and upcycling is really catching on. Visible and invisible mending and repair are now sought after skills.
On 22 April Transition Buxton are combining both a Clothes Swap and Stitch Don’t Ditch workshop. Go along to this informal, sociable, fun but practical event in the halls of Fairfield Nursery & Infant School on Bench Road SK17 7PG, 7-9pm. No fees, just a donation jar. Refreshments and some free parking available.
So much more fun than shopping online, helps beat the cost of living challenge, and reduces our impact on the planet all at the same time. How can you resist?
Can’t make it to Fairfield on Thursday 22 April? Transition Buxton are doing it again on 25 June in the St Anns Centre on Hardwick Square. Or come to both!
